Note from the President

Here we are at one of my favorite times of the year - PFCCU's annual meeting is quickly approaching, and there is no better time to celebrate the great strides we have made in the past year. The meeting is a time to wrap up 2005, but also plan ahead and look forward to an exciting 2006.

With membership service as our enduring benchmark, in the coming year I anticipate providing our members with an even greater standard of service and highquality products. As I have said many times, as PFCCU members we are all in this together, and I appreciate the support you have shown and camaraderie we all share. I encourage all members to take part in this special occasion and join us for one of my favorite events of the year - PFCCU's annual meeting. Details are on the back of this newsletter. See you there!

Money & Stuff

Your retirement, when you get there, may look very different from that of your parents or grandparents. People living longer, reforms to Social Security, and new attitudes about age are all changing the face of retirement. So now you ask yourself, "Am I saving enough for retirement?" Well, most people actually need to produce an income that will last 30 or more years. That's a lot longer than most people expect.

So, what can you do to achieve your retirement goals? Start planning and saving right now! Take advantage of any employer sponsored retirement plan you have available and contribute as much as you can. If you've got some time before you retire, don't invest too conservatively. Easier said than done, right?

If you're reading this, chances are you'll benefit from a free retirement seminar:
Ensuring a Lifetime of Income at Retirement on May 11.
Details are on the front page of this newsletter. Call PFCCU at 887-1983 to RSVP your seat. I look forward to seeing you there. My phone extension is 227, so call me with any questions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Exposing Email Fraud - "How can I protect myself against email fraud?"
There was a time when most scam emails were quite unsophisticated - an obvious hodgepodge of information that didn't take a rocket scientist to crack. Scammers now send authentic looking emails - complete with professional graphics and authoritative language - designed to dupe you into disclosing pertinent personal information. You may receive an email from what you think is a credible financial institution or other business, requesting that you verify your email address, password, credit card and pin numbers. This is commonly called phishing, where scammers are "fishing" for information. Scammers want this information so they can log onto your online account (be it your credit union, Ebay, etc.) drain your account, charge items to your credit card and/or purchase items online.

Arm yourself with the following detection tips and avoid becoming a victim.

  • Requesting too much information. A company that you do business with already has access to needed information. Email is not secure, so no one should ask you for your password, social security number or credit card information in an email.
  • Urgent! The scam artists don't want you to take the time to question their words. They just want you to act on it immediately! They may also threaten you with some sort of penalty or consequence for not following their instructions. Most likely, a company you do business with would not resort to such tactics. Beware.
  • The return address. A displayed return address can be different than the email address that you reply to. To verify the address you are sending to, click "Reply" then highlight the email address in the "To" field. Right click on the highlighted address and select "Properties". You will now see the address the email is being sent to. If the email return and email reply addresses do not match, ignore the email, then click "Delete".
  • Links to Web sites. Check to make sure links to Web sites are the same as the name displayed. A scam site could look very similar to the official site and you may not notice you aren't at the official site. To verify the link, click the link; if you are redirected to another Web site, this should be an indication that you have received a fraudulent email.
  • Double check with organizations. Does the email mention a regulatory agency? Find out if the organization listed even exists and, if so, confirm that they are aware of the situation. It is also a good idea to check with official government agencies for known scams. Visit with the Federal Trade Commission and Better Business Bureau Web sites to see what scams are listed there.

In general, you should beware of any email requesting information from you. It is better to be safe than sorry - so when in doubt, pick up the phone and call the institution in question to confirm any emails you receive. Reputable companies want you to feel secure, so they will have no problem helping you. By calling a company, you may even alert them to scams involving their good names. They can then take measures to protect their customers, such as issuing press releases and notifying authorities. And remember, if you happen to get an email that sounds too good to be true - it probably is.
